Sculpting the human figure, I have discovered, is an intensely rewarding act of creation, inducing a meditative calm and guilt-free delight in life; an active enjoyment of being me - doing something that I like to do immensely. I am so glad to have discovered it before it was too late. After the initial fizz of excitement on making my first figures from clay, I have slowly unravelled just some of the mysteries of what shape human bodies are, and where the keys to their beauty are hidden. One day I hope to have learnt enough to be able to show in the work sensuality, grace, age, youth, loveliness and sexuality, in a more abstracted, less literal, form. |

Running ManMy first experiment with welded metal sheet, a technique to achieve a life-size figure light and strong enough to reach beyond its point of balance. He is made from about 250 bits of 1mm steel beaten, bent and welded onto a wire skeleton. The oxide patina was made with oil and a big flame. I used myself as the model.
